Teaser Tuesdays (Jan. 6)

Okay, so for those of you who are new to this meme, here's how it works:

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My current read is Mark of the Thief by Jennifer A. Nielsen, author of the Ascendance trilogy. It's an ARC: the book comes out February 24.

Synopsis (from Goodreads):
When Nic, a slave in the mines outside of Rome, is forced to enter a sealed cavern containing the lost treasures of Julius Caesar, he finds much more than gold and gemstones: He discovers an ancient bulla, an amulet that belonged to the great Caesar and is filled with a magic once reserved for the Gods -- magic some Romans would kill for.
Now, with the deadly power of the bulla pulsing through his veins, Nic is determined to become free. But instead, he finds himself at the center of a ruthless conspiracy to overthrow the emperor and spark the Praetor War, a battle to destroy Rome from within. Traitors and spies lurk at every turn, each more desperate than the next to use Nic's newfound powers for their own dark purposes.
In a quest to stop the rebellion, save Rome, and secure his own freedom, Nic must harness the magic within himself and defeat the empire's most powerful and savage leaders.

This week I couldn't pick just one favorite quote, and I wasn't sure if I was even allowed to post one from a part of the book that isn't available to the public. I settled on the opening lines, because they're awesome and are available in the free preview on Amazon:

In Rome, nothing mattered more than the gods, and nothing mattered less than its slaves. Only a fool of a slave would ever challenge the gods' power.I was beginning to look like that fool.

Let me know what you think of the book, and check back on Friday for my review!

    1. It is, it's good! If you like the time period, I also reccomend the Queen's Thief books. They're probably the most popular books set in the time period. My favorite Ancient Rome book is The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff - it's about a Roman soldier living in Britain during the Roman conquest.
Thanks for checking out my TT!

  2. Although I sometimes have a hard time getting into books that feature magic, this sounds like a story I'd enjoy reading. Your Teaser made me want to know more.
My Tuesday post features LEARNIN’ THE ROPES.

    1. It does have magic, but it's also more of a political story with shifting loyalties. Nic kind of gets thrown into the middle of a big conspiracy theory.
I'll go check out your TT right now!

    1. Aw, thanks Lakshmi! It's definitely nice to be back into my routine. I have speech recognition software, so I can type again. Yay!
It is, it's a great book. And the author is great at opening lines. ;) Have you read THE FALSE PRINCE? That opening line gets better every time you read the book!
Teaser Tuesday is fun, and it's a great way to get people excited about upcoming reviews. Plus, it's easy to set up, which is great for when I don't have much time.
Thanks for nominating me, I'm honored! I feel bad about turning down the last one - I might just have to do this one. It looks fun!

    2. That sounds great! Take some rest though :)
No! Haven't read it! Should I Put it in my must TBR list? :D
Yeah, I agree. It's a cool idea for a post and you can do it in a jiffy! I have to try it for the coming week. I've never done any memes and this is a pretty easy one for starters.
It's alright! You shouldn't force someone to do the tag just because you tagged them :)
I'm happy you wanna do this one! ^_^

    3. You should definitely add it to your TBR list! It's one of my all-time favorite books. You can read my review of it here.
Yep, TT is great. I suppose eventually I'll move on to something a bit more interactive, like Top Ten Tuesdays, but for now I'm good with Teaser Tuesdays. :)
I've got my award post almost ready to go, so I'll post it in the next week. I had a lot of fun answering your questions!
